Are LED bulbs a hazard to the eyes?

Several articles have speculated that LED light sources may pose a hazard to the eyes. LEDs do not present dangers in normal use:

The main conclusions of this report are very reassuring about the potential danger of LEDs:

"The committee concludes that there is no direct evidence that the normal use of LED lighting is causing a negative effect on health". The LED lighting can, therefore, be used safely in a home, office or work environment. (The Committee concluded that there is no evidence of direct adverse health effects in the general population).

Children under 3 must not be directly exposed to strong blue lights:

Attention, the report warns: very young children (under 3 years) always have significant glare, and may cause damage to the retina. This phenomenon is due to the immature crystalline lens of young children. It is therefore not recommended to avoid exposing children to blue lights (between 400 nm and 500 nm), this is not only valid for LEDs but for all types oflighting. These color shades correspond to "cold white or white daylight bulbs, beyond 5500K". You can prefer bulbs or warm white Lights.

From a general point of view, it is therefore important to avoid very powerful sources of light, direct, focused (angle less than 30 °) and cold for young children.

Some people may find this light uncomfortable:

Older people may find LED lighting uncomfortable, especially for reading. However, this has no impact on health or vision, it is only a visual discomfort caused by blue light, especially on cold shades. If you are in this case, then you have to opt for warm tinted bulbs.
